“Children are apt to live up to what you believe of them.” – Lady Bird Johnson
There has been a significant amount of research done on the topic of parental expectations and how it can influence the future and outcomes of children.
Maple Lawn Montessori of Manassas believes that parents should be active participants in a child’s life, to help them better develop the skills and self-confidence they need to perform well in both school and later life.
However, as an experienced Montessori preschool in Manassas, Virginia, we advise parents to keep the following things in mind when setting expectations for children:
- Don’t Aim Too High
In a study released by the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, it was found that parental over-aspiration can be detrimental to a child’s performance both in school and in life. Set realistic standards that your child won’t have difficulty achieving.
- Don’t Aim Too Low
In a survey conducted by Save The Children – Britain, it was found that parents risked condemning children to a life of underachievement as they often underestimated how much their child could do.
Just as having expectations that seem impossible to reach can be dangerous to your child’s social and academic performance, setting expectations too low can also prevent them from reaching their full potential.
It’s a parent’s job to find a balance between the two.
