Four Tips for Early Literacy Development for Parents

That is why today, our Montessori preschool in Manassas, Virginia is offering this list of tips and tricks on how parents and caregivers can help their children study and succeed in school.

  1. Model finger
    Point on the word or picture as you read to help young readers develop “print awareness (the understanding that words are separated by spaces, move from left to right, and continues on the next line below).
  2. Identification
    Have your child identify the letters and words on the page as you read.
  3. Voicing out
    Help children sound out the words that they read on paper – use illustrations to aid with the starting process.
  4. Ask questions
    This will help connect new vocabulary with the old and sequence the events and text to self while reading a given story.
