The Traumatizing Truth about the 3-Day Potty Training Method

Basically, the 3-day potty training method is where parents are encouraged to fill up their children on their favorite salty snacks and all the juice that they could ever want. The mission – however cruel it may sound – is to fill their tiny bladders up to the point of eruption and praise them when their urine goes into the potty.
Praise is important for two reasons:

  1. To reinforce the “good” and desired behavior
  2. Because, most of the time, children don’t even know that they went to the bathroom

That’s right! Often, children don’t even realize that they went “potty”.
You replicate these steps day after day until the child can stay dry enough to keep wearing underwear. With this, several accidents may happen – which can continue or are even considered normal for weeks or months.
And then the allure of getting to choose their favorite snacks and drinks will keep them going – past the tears, and through the embarrassment of wetting themselves, the exhaustion and pressure, and of not being allowed to leave a tiny bathroom for reasons that they could never understand.
We at Maple Lawn Montessori of Manassas believe that your child should have the independence he/she needs for them to make sound and confident decisions on her own.
